Ben Allchin (Acting Chair of Governors) - Co-opted
Hello, my name is Ben and I've been a co-opted governor at Gledhow since September 2018 and have been acting Chair of Governors since January 2020. I live locally with my wife and two daughters, one of whom currently attends Gledhow. I've always worked with children and young people, first as a youth worker and then in two local secondary schools as a pastoral leader. For the last 8 years I have worked in the field of Special Educational Needs at a senior management level, currently as a senior leader in an outstanding local special school. My expertise and experience in education, particularly in SEN, is helpful as a governor so that I can support and challenge the school to provide the very best education and provision for pupils, to enable them to reach their full potential, regardless of their backgrounds, abilities or challenges.

Michael Walker - Staff Governor
I have been a part of the Gledhow family for over 7 years now. I completed my teacher training here in 2011 and have always found it a positive, warm and encouraging place to work. I currently teach in Year 6 and was elected Staff Governor in November 2017. I look forward to helping to preserve and grow the wonderful ethos that makes Gledhow such a unique place to learn and work.

Sarah Barrass - Co-opted Governor
I’m Sarah and having lived in Leeds for the past 7 years, I have recently moved into the surrounding area to the school. I am a Chartered Accountant and have 12 years’ experience working in both a financial and operational capacity, within Internal Audit currently but previously spending 9 years in practice as a Statutory Auditor within the Financial Sector. It is a privilege to have joined the governing body and I am keen to contribute to this incredibly important part of the community. I will use the experience and skills I have to contribute to the governing body’s role over the school’s finances.

Karen Holder-Benjamin - Co-opted governor
I am a newly appointed co-opted governor which I am excited about. I am a graduate System Analysis but had to change course soon after my daughter came along due to her condition. My daughter is age 13yrs with SEND and attends mainstream school. Having been through the education system ups and downs for my daughter’s case makes me very passionate ready to work and share my knowledge closely with your SENCO team in this challenging role. I am working in one of the leading primary school here in Leeds as part of the SEND team. Also, a member of LCC Housing Advisory Board that work closely in and for the wider community to oversee projects. And in my spare time sits on the executive board of the Leeds Caribbean Cricket Club. I am looking forward to working together for All children to be inclusive and benefits from this wonderful school family here at Gledhow Primary.

Adrian Fleming - Co-opted governor
I live in the local area and both my children attend Gledhow school so I am very pleased to find a way to use my enthusiasm, skills and experience to assist. I want the school to improve so volunteer my time to help make this happen. My working background is in commercial organisations and I currently run an international business. During my working life I have built up a good knowledge and direct experience in how to manage revenues, costs and people. It is exciting to offer these skills to the school to complement, help and learn from others who have much more knowledge about the educational and public sectors.

Hilary Iles - LA governor
I am Hilary Iles, an LEA appointed governor. My interest in Gledhow Primary School is long-standing as my own two children attended the school some 20 years ago and as I still live in the local vicinity I know a lot of children who have attended or currently attend Gledhow. I firmly believe that the school's reputation for being nurturing and caring is something to be valued and maintained. I am recently retired, having taught in Leeds' High Schools for 35 years and now have the time and the enthusiasm, through my role as governor, to support the Headteacher and all school staff, in ensuring that every child who enters Gledhow Primary School is afforded the teaching and learning experiences they deserve to go on to be the best they can. My years as a Pastoral Lead and teacher of a core subject in the profession have provided me with a wealth of experience to bring to my role. I currently serve on the Teaching and Learning Committee. I am a Schools' Volunteer for the NSPCC and deliver Safeguarding Assemblies and workshops to KS1 and KS2 pupils in primary schools across West Yorkshire. Such a role means that I am up to date with current issues on children's safety and well-being which is relevant to my work with PSHE at Gledhow. The nature of the pupils, the support of the parents, the enthusiasm of the staff and the inclusive, supportive ethos of the school is second to none and I will do all I can to listen, to support and to work to ensure that Gledhow continues to be a school which delivers the education, life-experiences and support necessary to prepare the children in its care to realise their potential.

Jenny Scannell - Co-opted governor
I am thrilled to be a new Co-opted governor for Gledhow Primary School. I have 13 years of education experience, both as a primary classroom teacher and in a variety of educational roles including teaching EAL learners, learners in special provisions and alternative education settings. My teacher training was through Teach First where I worked in two outstanding schools in London. I currently work in the Widening Participation team at Leeds Arts University. We aim to enable people from diverse backgrounds to access art education through workshops and giving information. This role is all about equality and diversity and my knowledge of this is can support the school. My current role involves outreach to schools and colleges around the whole Yorkshire region, so I get to see a lot of different schools. Working much more in depth with a school is part of the reason I am so pleased to become a governor. My first degree is in Textile and Fashion Design and I have a passion for art teaching and learning. Also, I am a practicing artist and will be bringing these skills to the team. Leeds is home to me and I am passionate about our local communities, especially after becoming a parent myself. I live just around the corner, so joining the Gledhow family feels right to me. I look forward to meeting students, staff and getting to serve our community.
